This was a retrospective pick - at one time service stations had uniformed attendants who pumped gasoline, routinely cleaned windows and checked the oil and other components - such as the battery - this item is a vintage battery cell tester which would have been used to test the charge - a low reading might indicate a top-up of water was required (we are of course talking about pre-maintenance free batteries) to help recharge the cells. This item is in used but really nice condition - I would date it to the 1940's, possibly earlier - it appears to be all original, right down to the paint on the wood handle - the prongs are a galvanized steel -
